Foam Control in Industrial Processes: How Do Silicone Antifoams Work?

Foam forms when gas bubbles trapped in a liquid are stabilized by surface-active substances. It arises spontaneously during mixing, pumping, or chemical reactions in many processes, including textile dyeing and washing, wastewater treatment, paint and coating production, and detergent and cleaning products.
Uncontrolled foam is more than a visual problem. It reduces the usable volume of tanks and reactors, causes overflows and product loss, lowers pump efficiency, and can lead to incorrect level readings on filling lines. In paints and coatings, it can create surface defects such as craters and pinholes.
Silicone antifoams solve this problem thanks to their low surface tension. Silicone droplets that are insoluble in the foaming medium enter the bubble walls (lamellae) and spread rapidly across the surface. This spreading locally thins the lamella and destabilizes it; the bubble wall ruptures and the foam collapses. Insolubility of the silicone in the medium is the key condition for this effect.
Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, there is a functional difference: an antifoam is added to the process in advance to prevent foam from forming, while a defoamer is used to quickly break down foam that has already formed. Silicone-based products stand out because they can be effective in both roles at low dosages.
ALSİLON ANFO 100 is a silicone oil enriched with antifoam properties in a hydrophobic structure. It is developed to deliver effective performance in process formulations, specialty chemical blends, and various industrial applications that require foam control.
A few practical points stand out for effective foam control. Dosage should be determined in small steps through preliminary laboratory trials; overdosing can cause surface defects, especially in paint and coating systems. The addition point and mixing conditions are important for good dispersion of the product in the system. Since temperature, pH, and the type of surfactant in the medium affect antifoam performance, results should be validated under real process conditions.
